About the Class

In this class, I’ll teach you how to paint with watercolors. We will learn different techniques, practice them together, and work on two artworks that you’ll be able to hang in your home: a misty forest and a night sky. Our Starter’s Kit includes watercolor paints and paper, brushes, pencils, kneaded rubber, paper tape. By the end of the class, you’ll be able to master the fundamentals of watercolors!

About Laura

Hey! I’m Laura and I’m a self-taught artist from Italy.

I believe that it’s never too late to start with art and that anyone can start – all it takes is passion, practice, and patience!”

My Passion for Art

I moved to Hong Kong about 2 years ago, after living in the US, Germany, and Ireland. I’ve fallen in love with this city!  Art is what I’m passionate about. I get inspiration from the animal world, galaxies, and the places I travel to, and watercolors are my favorite medium.

I enjoy walking around the city with my sketchbook, sitting down, and capturing impressions of the city around me, as well as working on larger projects from the comfort of my desk! I have opened a website (thequietplaceart.com; IG: @thequietplaceart), participated in two group exhibitions in Ireland and five in Hong Kong, taught 1:1 and group painting classes, and my work has been featured in art magazines and even on TV.

Finding the Way

I’ve been drawing ever since I can remember. However, when I went to college and started working in tech, I sort of “lost it on the way”. In 2017 I realized that I still identified myself as an artist, but I actually wasn’t spending any time on it anymore… So I decided to change that and make it a priority again!

I started by joining a session of urban sketching in the city where I was living back then, Dublin. I was welcomed by a lovely community of artists, who encouraged me to keep going and gave me a lot of useful tips. I learned how to use watercolors and within a year and a half, I had created @thequietplaceart and participated in my very first art exhibition!

I’m so grateful for the impact that the group had on my art journey that I’ve committed to inspiring more and more people to get into art. I started by holding some corporate painting workshops, which were a lot of fun! It’s so rewarding to see people evolve on their own, once they pick up the basics that I teach them. I’ve also started teaching watercolor classes on a 1:1 basis. When I learned about Friday, I knew I had to be part of this project, in order to amplify my message and reach even more people.

My Quiet Place

I find art to be so soothing and therapeutic! I have a full-time job as a project manager, so most of my day involves creating schedules, plans, and checklists. After working at a computer screen all day long, I’ll always make time for art. I see art as the perfect getaway from the stress of the city, especially since the pandemic started.

Painting almost works like meditation for me – I lose all sense of time and come away feeling so refreshed! I believe in the power of art as a way to connect deeper with oneself, as opposed to the wider audience. Through art, I find peace and “my quiet place”.

A Message to Art Lovers

My goal is to inspire more and more people to take up art as a way to find calm, build resilience, and create their own quiet place.

It’s definitely doable to have a full-time job in a different industry and still be an artist. I believe that it’s never too late to start with art and that anyone can start – all it takes is passion, practice, and patience!
